Director's Column: The Giving Tree

January is The Giving Tree month at Bowen. It has been a long-standing tradition to take up a collection throughout the month to help children in need. This year, we will be collecting for the Newton Food Pantry. When I contacted them to ask what items they most needed, the response from the coordinator was, "It is great to hear from you. My children attended Bowen Cooperative, so I have a soft spot for your school." Sure enough, her (now 32 year old) son's tiny handprint is on a quilt hanging outside my office! Some items the Newton Food Pantry is looking for are: Hearty Canned Soups Shelf Safe Milk Broth Tuna Snacks (e.g. granola bars) Shampoo and Conditioner Toothpaste and Toothbrushes Laundry Detergent Dish Soap Please NO Travel Size or Oversized Items. It is our belief that even preschool children can begin to learn the value of thinking of others and their needs. Please consider bringing your child with you to purchase an item for our "tree". We touched on the topic of giving when we put our Thanksgiving baskets together; the Giving Tree is a great opportunity to circle back to the concepts of kindness and giving. Best, Nina
