Director's Column: A Few Ideas for Fun on the Long Weekend!
It seems like we've turned a corner with the weather this week. The unseasonably warm days have given way to colder ones. The sun is still shining, though, and we still plan to spend as much time as we can outdoors, even if we are a little more bundled up than we were before!
Fall is my favorite season. I love watching the leaves change; I love the fall produce. I love Halloween and Thanksgiving, and I love pulling out the boots, sweaters, and jackets that have been in hibernation all spring and summer. It is a beautiful time of year to be living in New England, and we should make the most of it before the bitter cold sets in. Here are a few ideas for the long weekend.
Old Sturbridge Village: A New England Thanksgiving "Experience the traditions of preparing for an early 19th-century New England Thanksgiving. Learn about 1830s dining etiquette and watch the men of the Village compete in a post-dinner target shoot (weekends). Smell the scents of roasted turkey and pies warming by the fire. Hear the minister talk about the true meaning of Thanksgiving in the Village’s historic Center Meetinghouse." https://www.osv.org/event/a-new-england-thanksgiving/ Winter Skate at Patriot Place It's the Grand Opening Weekend for ice skating at Patriot Place! The rink is open from 11am-10pm, and, in addition to skating, there will be a Caricature Artist from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday and Face Painting from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, included with admission. https://www.patriot-place.com/events/winter-skate-at-patriot-place-grand-opening-weekend/ Gnomevember at Tower Hill Botanic Garden
"The Gnomes have escaped and we need your help to find them! Seekers of all ages are invited to join our gnome hunt taking place throughout Tower Hill’s formal gardens. Pick up a map at the Visitor’s Center front desk upon arrival. The map will lead you through the Garden Within Reach, Cottage Garden, Vegetable Garden, Lawn Garden, and Secret Garden where you will mark off the locations of the gnome friends that you find. Completed maps can be brought to the Visitor’s Center front desk where hunters will receive a special treat (a sticker!). Reservation and advance tickets not required; simply enjoy this activity as part of your admission to the Garden." https://www.towerhillbg.org/2019/09/23/tower-hill-botanic-garden-garden-gnome-scavenger-hunt-november/ Whatever you plan to do, have a wonderful long weekend, and we will see you next week!
