3-Day: Bowen Police and Fire Department At Your Service

It's been a WHIRLwind of a week in 3-Day. Our study of the community has moved to the police and firefighters who protect us and keep us safe! The children were taking emergency calls at the station, putting out fires and using the skills they learned at the hospital to administer first aid to those in need.

Monday we made ambulances using glue and cut-outs; we constructed our vehicles with a siren on top. We read about all the emergency vehicles there are in our community.

We learned some new songs about firefighters and police officers. Both are sung to the tune of "I'm a Little Teapot".

I'm a police officer

with my star.

I help people near and far.

If you are in trouble call on me,

and I will be there,

one, two, three!

I'm a firefighter, on the go.

Here is my helmet;

here is my hose.

When I see a fire hear me SHOUT!

I turn on the water and put the fire OUT!

On Wednesday, we made fire with our finger paints. Children used shades of red and yellow to make some fiery artwork. As we play in our fire station, the children use pretend hoses to put out the flames that decorate the wall. We read My Mom is a Firefighter, a wonderful story about a boy with a family at home as well as a firehouse family. I'm not sure if the highlight of the day was a visit from the Newton Fire Department and Engine 4 or sledding for our first time down the Bowen Hill! We took lots of pictures and you can't can't miss the excitement in their eyes!

Just when you thought the week couldn't get any better, at meeting time on Friday we had a very special visit from Officer Fleming from the Newton Police Department's traffic division. She said we were the best class she has ever visited! Your children were terrific listeners and asked some great safety questions. Before leaving, she gave each of us a special gift from the department. I'm pretty sure you've already seen it!

Lastly, I wanted to thank each and every one of you for the thoughtful birthday card and the beautiful flowers! It truly made my day! The children even sang "Happy Birthday" to me at snack.

We hope you all a have a great weekend and we look forward to seeing you Wednesday for our classroom gathering. Your children have been working on some special holiday surprises for you.

Karen and Mayson
